RIORDONS CREEK SLIP

Location

Client

Riordons Creek, between Springs Junction & Hanmer Springs

NZTA

Year

2025-2026

In June 2025, heavy rain triggered a significant slip on State Highway 7 near Riordons Creek, between Springs Junction and Hanmer Springs. The slip reduced the highway to a single lane with traffic signals and a 30 km/h speed restriction, and required a series of overnight closures for initial clearance work.

Rock Control was engaged to deliver a permanent stabilisation solution for the site. Works began with initial scaling and removal of unstable material from the slope face, before the installation of high tensile steel mesh anchored to the headscarp. Erosion matting was installed behind the mesh to stabilise the weak soil layer and promote long-term vegetation re-establishment.

The crew navigated steep terrain and worked through snowy conditions, pausing operations when weather made it unsafe to proceed. Health and safety remained the priority throughout.
